What is a backyard?
This is a unique endurance running format created by Lazarus Lake - the same mind behind the legendary Barkley Marathons.
The concept is simple, but brutal: every hour, runners start a new loop measuring 6.706 km (4.167 miles). This distance is no coincidence. Over 24 hours, it adds up to exactly 100 miles (160.9 km), the “Holy Grail” distance for ultrarunners.
Runners must complete each loop within the hour. Any remaining time is used for recovery - eating, resting, or preparing for the next start. If a runner fails to finish the loop in time or doesn’t show up at the starting line, they are eliminated.
The race continues until only one runner remains - the Last Man Standing. That runner is declared the winner.
The first Big Dog's Backyard Ultra took place in 2011 in Tennessee, USA. Since then, the format has spread worldwide, including across the Baltic states.
The current world record belongs to Phil Gore, who completed an astonishing 119 loops (798 km) at the Dead Cow Gully Backyard Ultra in 2025.
Current Lithuanian record belongs to Haroldas Šubertas who completed 64 loops (428.8 km) in March 2026 Capital Backyard Ultra in USA.
Current woman’s Lithuanian record belongs to Julija Šorytė, who completed 54 loops (362 km) at the Banana Slug Backyard Ultra in 2025.
